Myki and Melbourne's train

When I was there I was hoping this Myki was available because it was promoted in the stations. Even I took a registration form for that. But, until I left Melbourne, Myki hadn't been operated. And it just started to operate yesterday. Here is some info about Myki.

Myki went live on Tuesday on Melbourne's train network but cards are only available online and are not yet operating on trams and buses.

Already there have been hiccups, with some machines used for logging on and off the system not functioning.

Ms Kosky said it was a difficult system to deliver but Victorians would grow to love it once they had adjusted to the change.

"We've had more than 14,000 registrations in less than 24 hours, I mean that's just extraordinary,'' she told reporters on Wednesday.

"So people are very keen to get their Myki card, they've gone online, they've registered, they've provided their details and they're very keen to use the system.''

The $1.35 billion Myki ticketing system is almost three years late and $350 million over budget. It enables commuters to travel using a re-usable touch card that can be charged online or at train station pay points.

The roll-out comes as the first of 38 new X'Trapolis trains hit the rails for testing on Wednesday.

Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said Ms Kosky could not guarantee that the new Myki system would not lead to increased fare evasion.

Mr Baillieu said the government had broken its promise to have Myki operating across the public transport network by the end of the year.

"Myki has been a disaster for this government, it's a disaster for commuters, it's not working properly, it shouldn't have been let loose on Victorians and the government has broken yet another promise,'' he said.
