On any given day, Sydney Road in Brunswick carries thousands of cars to and from Melbourne's north. But yesterday, for just six hours, it carried none.
Instead, four kilometres of the busy shopping strip was closed to all but those on two wheels, and to trams, as Moreland City Council staged its second Cyclovia.
"Australia being so wedded to the car means some people react with horror when they find out you can't drive," Cyclovia organiser Nicholas Elliot said. "But there's been huge support for this."
Moreland councillor Mark Higginbotham said events such as Cyclovia were crucial. "We are going to have to be more reliant on public transport and bikes," he said yesterday, calling for car-free days to be introduced on a monthly or even weekly basis.
But not everyone agrees. While cafes and bars appeared to be doing their usual Sunday trade, other businesses said customers had vanished.
