John Edwards has revealed his heartache over his separation from his terminally ill wife, Elizabeth.

The former U.S. senator has split from his family after finally admitting he had an affair with an aide, and fathered an illegitimate child.

He described the separation as 'an extraordinarily sad moment', adding: 'But I love my children more than anything and still care deeply about Elizabeth.'

The two-time Democratic presidential candidate released a statement saying he had split from Elizabeth following U.S. reports that the couple had quietly separated before his public admission that he fathered a love child last week.
