HIS week, singer Susan Boyle touched a nerve with a world weary of economic gloom and fed up with greed.
She appeared on Britain's Got Talent and millions have watched the 47-year-old unemployed woman from Blackburn in Scotland sing I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables.
If you have a computer or a television screen, you have no doubt seen Susan sing. It gives you goose bumps.
Now she is a household name - from one song and a sensational film clip on YouTube.
Was it her voice, or was it that she represented the underdog that made her an overnight sensation?
Susan was certainly up against it when she walked on stage.
The audience and the judges were ready to ridicule a single woman who lives at home with her cat, Pebbles, and dared to dream of a singing career. At her age and with that hair and those eyebrows.
Then Susan sang and became the battler who overcame the odds. She may win the show. Already a Hollywood producer is chasing her and there is talk of a make-over.
Somehow I think most of us hope Susan is allowed to stay just the way she is.
