Julia Gillard

With great humility, resolve and enthusiasm I have today sought and accepted the endorsement of my colleagues to become Prime Minister of the greatest country on earth.I am truly honoured to lead the Australia that I love. And I am utterly committed to the service of our people.I grew up in South Australia with parents who worked day and night for our family. They insisted on hard work, a good education, on treating people with respect and on doing our bit for the community.I believe in Government that rewards those who work the hardest not those who complain the loudest.I believe in Government that rewards those who day after day work in our factories and farms, our classrooms and hospitals, our storefronts and offices, our mines and mills and those who care for family at home.  People who play by the rules, set their alarms early, do their jobs, educate their kids, stand by their neighbours and love our country.I love this country too much to sit back and watch Tony Abbott win an election and then harm our schools and hospitals.I love this country too much to watch Tony Abbott win an election and restore WorkChoices.I will lead a strong and responsible Government that will take control of our future.I believe we can do other great things together – we should not be afraid of the future.Today I can assure every Australian that their Budget will be in surplus in 2013, three years ahead of schedule.I intend to lead a Government that does even more to harness the talent of the Australian people. To ensure every child gets a fair go and a great education. It is my intention to lead a Government that does more to harness the wind and the sun and the new emerging technologies.I will do this because I believe climate change is real. I believe human beings contribute to it.If elected as Prime Minister I will re-prosecute the case for a carbon price at home and abroad. I will do that as global economic conditions improve and as our economy continues to strengthen. There is another question on which I will seek a consensus and that is the proposed Resources Super Profit Tax.Australians are entitled to a fairer share of our national inheritance, of the mineral wealth in our ground.I want an Australia that can achieve even greater things in the future. A nation where hard work is rewarded and the dignity of work is respected; a nation that prides itself on the excellence of its education system; where Government can be relied upon to provide high quality services for all Australians. To the Australian people I say there will be some days I will delight you, there may be some days I disappoint you but on every day I will do my absolute best for you.
