Soccer players want asylum in Oz | Herald Sun
IT is probably no surprise to most people that soccer players from poor and war-torn countries have applied for asylum in Australia.
However, Immigration Department officials would not seem to have given the possibility much thought.
The Homeless World Cup turned into a shambles when only two players from the Liberian team turned up to play in the women's final against Zambia.
Fifteen players from Afghanistan and Zimbabwe are now believed to have applied for protection.
But applying for asylum means more than just saying you don't want to go home. You have to establish that you will be at personal risk if you return.
More care should have been taken when issuing visas, otherwise such events become a means of jumping more deserving cases in the immigration queue.
