THE federal opposition is calling on the consumer watchdog to investigate Coles and Woolworths over their decisions to slash the price of milk.
Dairy farmers are up in arms over the move, which they say will deprive the industry of even more cashflow as it struggles to overcome the effects of the drought and now the floods.
Woolworths turned to newspaper advertising on Australia Day to spruik its home-brand two-litre bottles of milk for just $2.
Opposition agriculture spokesman John Cobb said it was shameful that the supermarket giants were able to cut milk's price tag by a third, while farmers are forced to sell below the cost of production.
"The ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) must immediately undertake a fair dinkum investigation into the big two supermarkets and milk wholesalers," he said today.
