Big Brother

UK surveillance cameras stir big brother fears | News.com.au
FEARS are growing of "big brother" local governments in the UK after it was revealed they have greatly increased the number of CCTV surveillance cameras.

Privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch reported that 418 local authorities now control 59,753 cameras.

Ten years ago the total was 21,000.

Director Alex Deane said the rise of the expensive "surveillance networks" had made little impact on the crime figures they were designed to cut.

A London Metropolitan Police study found only one crime is solved every year for every 1,000 CCTV cameras.

Often CCTV footage requested by police is too grainy or the tapes have been lost.
