Kevin Rudd and God

source: Light FM Melbourne

During his time as PM, Kevin Rudd saw homelessness as one of the bigger issues that certainly needed more attention. Mr Rudd now has a tangible understanding of what a cold night in Melbourne really feels like, after attending this years’ CEO Sleepout on Thursday. Since his stepping down from the ‘top job’ last year, Kevin Rudd reflects on how his faith has helped him to fight for the things that he believes in, on Open House.

“The smarter thing to do would have been to have me in Cairns.” Kevin was in Melbourne to give a speech about William Cooper, a leader of the Aboriginal human rights movement in the 1930’s. Rudd wasn’t deterred by the cold and spent the night sleeping on concrete.

“I think it’s the mark of any decent society that those who have no place to call home, should have a place to call home.” Mr Rudd says that he is still committed to campaigning for the welfare of homeless people, with the aim of having less people to campaign for. With the help of charity, corporate bodies and individuals, we can strive to make a dent in the homeless population.

One does not need to be religious to be a charitable person, and Mr Rudd urges everyone to get involved. He says, however that a religious person must be generous.

“If you’re serious about faith… you’ve got to help the most vulnerable, the most exposed and the most voiceless in your society”

Mr Rudd might aspire to be in the news more frequently for his stance on homelessness, However, these past few days, the media have been whispering that the former PM might want his old job back.

“The key thing is not to sit around and mope.”

Kevin Rudd also says that having a go is what’s really important, and that his goal is to be one of the better, if not the best Australian Foreign Minister. He has faith that this minor detail, among other things can be achieved.

Have a listen to the Foreign Minister talk about his faith, his career and what it’s really like being cold, on Open House.

Mount Lokon

Hope everyone is safe there, including my brother with his family...

Central Indonesian volcano erupts; residents flee - Yahoo! News

A volcano in central Indonesia spit lava and smoke high into the air early Friday, sending thousands of panicked residents racing down its fiery slopes. One person died of a heart attack, but no other casualties were reported.

Mount Lokon in northern Sulawesi province unleashed its first powerful eruption at 10:46 p.m. Thursday, said Brian Rulrone, a disaster management agency official. That blast was followed by a second just after midnight and a third at 1:10 a.m. Friday.

Glowing lava cascaded from the mouth of the crater, triggering forest fires along its western slope, said Ferry Rusmawan, an official at the nearest monitoring post, adding that activity remained high and another eruption appeared imminent.

The 5,741-foot (1,750-meter) mountain continued to rumble during the day.

Soldiers and police helped evacuate homes on the mountain's fertile slopes, said Jimmy Eman, the acting mayor in the nearby town of Tomohon, adding that the only victim so far was a 56-year-old woman who died of a heart attack while fleeing.

More than 6,000 people were crammed into schools, churches and other temporary shelters and authorities said 27,000 others living within 2 miles (3.5 kilometers) of the crater also would be moved.

"This is the largest eruption I've ever experienced," said Nelson Uada, who was among those evacuated overnight. "It was very scary. Glowing lava flowed like flames in the darkness and it sounded like we were in a war."

Flights to the nearest international airport in Manado, the provincial capital, were not disrupted, said Lucky Podaag, an airport spokesman.

Mount Lokon has been on high alert for nearly a week and is one of Indonesia's 129 active volcanos. Its last major eruption in 1991 killed a Swiss hiker and forced thousands of people to flee their homes.

The vast archipelago nation of 240 million people sits along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a horseshoe-shaped string of seismic faults that lines the Pacific Ocean.

Trying to find remedies which can help me in getting a deep and peaceful sleep day

Well, I have been lack of sleep for the last two months...I am afraid that I've got Insomnia. Having reading some articles about insomnia, I diagnose myself of being affected by the disease. However, I don't somoke and drink at all..so I think my insomnia comes from  the stress.

I will try to follow this treatment to cure my sleep disorder..If it doesnt help, umm..I might see a GP for medical reason

According to this webiste, I can improve my sleep by doing this sleep hygiene.

  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine before bed.  *I dont do this, so I just skip it

  • Don't take daytime naps.* I seldom take naps

  • Eat at regular times each day (avoid large meals near bedtime) * Now I get used to eat at night (after 9 PM) but I am afraid I will be skinnier if I stop having dinner after 9 pm.

  • Exercise at least 2 hours before going to bed. *Ouch I never exercise..So, I will start a change from this...

  • Go to bed at the same time every night.*This is my failure..I seldom  go to bed at the same time

  • Keep comfortable sleeping conditions. *Well, I have to move all gadgets from my bedroom...which I fell I can't do this...so I will keep them..

  • Remove the anxiety that comes with trying to sleep by reassuring yourself that you will sleep or by distracting yourself. *Ok, I will try to make a peace for my self

  • Use the bed only for sleep and sex. *Um, I need also to change this...

Insomnia is difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep, or having nonrefreshing sleep for at least 1 month.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Primary insomnia refers to insomnia that is not caused by any known physical or mental condition.

Insomnia is caused by many different things. The most common causes of insomnia are:

  • Alcohol

  • Anxiety

  • Coffee

  • Stress

Secondary insomnia is caused by a medical condition. Depression is a very common cause of secondary insomnia. Often, insomnia is the symptom that causes people with depression to seek medical help.

Symptoms

  • Difficulty falling asleep on most nights

  • Feeling tired during the day or falling asleep during the day

  • Not feeling refreshed when you wake up

  • Waking up several times during sleep

People who have primary insomnia tend to keep thinking about getting enough sleep. The more they try to sleep, the greater their sense of frustration and distress, and the more difficult sleep becomes.

Signs and tests

Your health care provider will do a physical exam and ask you questions about your current medications, drug use, and medical history. Usually, these are the only methods needed to diagnose insomnia.

Polysomnography, an overnight sleep study, can help rule out other types of sleep disorders (such as sleep apnea).

Treatment

The following tips can help improve sleep. This is called sleep hygiene.

  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine before bed.

  • Don't take daytime naps.

  • Eat at regular times each day (avoid large meals near bedtime).

  • Exercise at least 2 hours before going to bed.

  • Go to bed at the same time every night.

  • Keep comfortable sleeping conditions.

  • Remove the anxiety that comes with trying to sleep by reassuring yourself that you will sleep or by distracting yourself.

  • Use the bed only for sleep and sex.

Do something relaxing just before bedtime (such as reading or taking a bath) so that you don't dwell on worrisome issues. Watching TV or using a computer may be stimulating to some people and interfere with their ability to fall asleep.

If you can't fall asleep within 30 minutes, get up and move to another room. Engage in a quiet activity until you feel sleepy.

One method of preventing worries from keeping you awake is to keep a journal before going to bed. List all issues that worry you. By this method, you transfer your worries from your thoughts to paper. This leaves your mind quieter and more ready to sleep.

If you follow these recommendations and still have insomnia, your doctor may prescribe medications such as benzodiazepines.

Expectations (prognosis)

You should be able to sleep if you practice good sleep hygiene. See a doctor if you have chronic insomnia that does not improve.

It is important to remember that your health is not at risk if you do not get 6 - 8 hours of sleep every day. Different people have different sleep requirements. Some do fine on 4 hours of sleep a night, while others only thrive if they get 10 - 11 hours.

Sleep requirements also change with age. Listen to your body's sleep signals and don't try to sleep more or less than is refreshing for you.

Complications

Daytime sleepiness is the most common complication, though there is some evidence that lack of sleep can also lower your immune system's ability to fight infections. Sleep deprivation is also a common cause of auto accidents -- if you are driving and feel sleepy, take a break.

Calling your health care provider

Call your doctor if chronic insomnia has become a problem.

Ratu Atut : Gubernur Banten Koruptor dan manipulator?

Well, I am confused after reading this article. Everyone reading the article below will conclude that she is a corruptor and manipulator. She has abused her position as the Banten Governor. However, she hasn't been charged according to the existent law? How come she has been proved of doing corruption, but she is still on power......I live in a weird country where corruption and manipulation are OK. Most leaders here are so corrupted...the worst and scariest things, they use religions too to manipulate. As far as I know..they mirror themselves as religious leaders..but on the other hand they corrupt and they abuse power....what a hypocrite! I think I live in the wrong country...

rakyatmerdekaonline.com - SBY Akui Ekonomi Banten Paling Rendah

[guh]

IPO Air Asia..Will you buy its shares?

JPNN.COM : AirAsia Listing Pengujung 2011

PT Indonesia Air Asia (IAA) berencana go public lewat mekanisme penawaran saham perdana (initial public offering/IPO) pada kuartal empat 2011.

Analis PT Anugerah Securindo Indah, Viviet S Putri menilai, IAA memiliki prospek sangat bagus. (far)

Drinking too much water 'can be bad for your health': Benefits are a myth

Drinking too much water 'can be bad for your health': Benefits are a myth | Mail Online

t is said to help us prevent kidney damage, lose weight and increase concentration levels.

But experts now warn that drinking eight glasses of water a day is not good for you after all – and could be harmful.

They say that scientific claims behind long-standing government guidelines are worse than ‘nonsense’.

The NHS – along with leading doctors and nutritionists – advises the public to drink about 1.2 litres (or two-and-a-half pints) of water per day.

However, a report describes the danger of dehydration as a ‘myth’ and says there is no evidence behind claims that water prevents multiple health problems.

Glasgow-based GP Margaret McCartney says the NHS Choices website’s advice that people should drink six to eight glasses a day is ‘not only nonsense, but thoroughly debunked nonsense’. She adds that the benefits of the drink are often exaggerated by ‘organisations with vested interests’ such as bottled water brands.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, Dr McCartney also points out that research shows drinking when not thirsty can impair concentration, rather than boost it, and separate evidence suggests that chemicals used for disinfection found in bottled water could be bad for your health.

But on the other hand...

Drinking excessive amounts can also lead to loss of sleep as people have to get up in the night to go to the toilet, and other studies show it can even cause kidney damage, instead of preventing it.

Worryingly, Dr McCartney also warns that taking on too much water can lead to a rare but potentially fatal condition called hyponatraemia, which sees the body’s salt levels drop and can lead to swelling of the brain.

'Don't tell anyone but I'm actually full of pineapple juice'

In 2003 actor Anthony Andrews, who starred in the ITV adaptation of Brideshead Revisited, was hit by the illness after drinking too much water during rehearsals for a West End role.

Another doctor quoted in the article adds there is no basis for claims that water helps people to lose weight by suppressing their appetite. Professor Stanley Goldfarb, a metabolism expert from the University of Pennsylvania in the U.S., says: ‘The current evidence is that there really is no evidence.

‘If children drank more water rather than getting extra calories from soda, that’s good . . . [but] there is no evidence that drinking water before meals reduces appetite during a meal.’

About 2.06billion litres of bottled water was drunk in Britain last year, compared with 1.42billion litres in 2000. Despite this increase we still drink three times as much tea, and five times as much beer.

After reading this, will you still buy Nike shoes?

AP Exclusive: Nike faces new worker abuse claims - Yahoo! News

Workers making Converse sneakers in Indonesia say supervisors throw shoes at them, slap them in the face and call them dogs and pigs. Nike, the brand's owner, admits that such abuse has occurred among the contractors that make its hip high-tops but claims there was little it could do to stop it.

Dozens of workers interviewed by The Associated Press and a document released by Nike show that the footwear and athletic apparel giant has far to go to meet the standards it set for itself a decade ago to end its reliance on sweatshop labor.

That does not appear to explain abuses that workers allege at the Pou Chen Group factory in Sukabumi, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Jakarta — it didn't start making Converse products until four years after Nike bought Converse. One worker there said she was kicked by a supervisor last year after making a mistake while cutting rubber for soles.

"We're powerless," said the woman, who like several others interviewed spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisals. "Our only choice is to stay and suffer, or speak out and be fired."

The 10,000 mostly female workers at the Taiwanese-operated Pou Chen plant make around 50 cents an hour. That's enough, for food and bunkhouse-type lodging, but little else. Some workers interviewed by the AP in March and April described being hit or scratched in the arm — one man until he bled. Others said they were fired after filing complaints.

"They throw shoes and other things at us" said a 23-year-old woman in the embroidery division. "They growl and slap us when they get angry.

"It's part of our daily bread."

Mira Agustina, 30, said she was fired in 2009 for taking sick leave, even though she produced a doctor's note.

"It was a horrible job," she said. "Our bosses pointed their feet at us, calling us names like dog, pig or monkey." All are major insults to Muslims. Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation.

At the PT Amara Footwear factory located just outside Jakarta, where another Taiwanese contractor makes Converse shoes, a supervisor ordered six female workers to stand in the blazing sun after they failed to meet their target of completing 60 dozen pairs of shoes on time.

"They were crying and allowed to continue their job only after two hours under the sun," said Ujang Suhendi, 47, a worker at a warehouse in the factory. The women's supervisor received a warning letter for the May incident after complaints from unionized workers.

The company's own inquiries also found workers at the two factories were subjected to "serious and egregious" physical and verbal abuse, including the punishment of forcing workers to stand in the sun, said Hannah Jones, a Nike executive who oversees the company's efforts to improve working conditions.

"We do see other issues of that similar nature coming up across the supply chain but not on a frequent level," she said. "We see issues of working conditions on a less egregious nature across the board."

Nike, which came under heavy criticism a decade ago for its use of foreign sweatshops and child labor, has taken steps since then to improve conditions at its 1,000 overseas factories. But the progress it has made at factories producing gear with its premier "swoosh" logo is not fully reflected in those making Converse products.

An internal report Nike released to the AP after it inquired about the abuse show that nearly two-thirds of 168 factories making Converse products worldwide fail to meet Nike's own standards for contract manufacturers.

Twelve are in the most serious category, indicating problems that could range from illegally long work hours to denying access to Nike inspectors. A Nike spokeswoman said the company was not aware of physical abuse occurring at those factories. Another 97 are in a category defined as making no progress in improving problems ranging from isolated verbal harassment to paying less than minimum wage. A further six factories had not been audited by Nike.

Nike blames problems on pre-existing licenses to produce Converse goods that it says prevent the parent company from inspecting factories or introducing its own code of conduct.

It says the situation is further complicated because the license holders themselves usually farm out the production work to a subcontractor. Most of the agreements have come up for renewal in the past five years. But it is only the past two years that it has made a concerted effort to incorporate Converse factories into the monitoring program that applies to Nike factories.

"We have been working every time we can to renew those agreements or change those agreements or to cease those agreements and to ensure that when we do new agreements we get more ability to influence the licensee and their subcontractors much more directly," Jones said.

Some corporate experts question whether the company is doing all it can.

"I simply find it impossible that a company of the size and market power of Nike is impotent in persuading a local factory in Indonesia or anywhere else in meeting its code of conduct," said Prakash Sethi, a corporate strategy professor at Baruch College at the City University of New York.

Critics of outsourcing manufacturing to the lowest-cost countries say it keeps prices down but allows apparel, electronics and toy companies to reduce their accountability for the conditions in such factories. Even as concern about sweatshop labor has grown, some contractors have simply moved operations to more remote areas, farther from the prying eyes of international and local watchdogs.

Indonesia is Nike's third-largest manufacturing base, after China and Vietnam, with 140,000 workers at 14 contract factories. Of those, 17,000 produce its Converse line at four factories.

Pou Chen, the largest of the four Converse factories, is located in a hilly city where the minimum wage is well below the national average. Sukabumi can only be reached by car — a five-hour journey across bumpy, winding roads. The plant started making Converse products in 2007.

The Taiwanese contractor said it fired one supervisor after being told workers had spoken to The AP earlier this year.

Others involved in mistreatment, however, have been allowed to keep their jobs, according to Pou Chen.

Nike says the factory is developing programs to teach managers cultural sensitivity and leadership skills.

It says it also is closely monitoring the PT Amara factory.

After years of criticism over its labor practices at factories abroad, Nike in 2005 became the first major apparel company to disclose the names and locations of hundreds of plants that produce its sneakers, clothes and other products.

It admitted finding "abusive treatment" — either physical or verbal — in many of the Nike plants. The complaints ranged from workweeks that exceeded 60 hours to being forbidden to go to the bathroom.

The Beaverton, Oregon-based company has since invested heavily in training managers and more closely monitoring their activities.

Nike has not published the locations of all factories making products for affiliate companies, which includes Converse, but plans to by the end of the year.

Don't send Assange to Sweden.......

WikiLeaks: Julian Assange's lawyer tells extradition judges sex allegations are 'flawed' | Mail Online

Don't send him to Sweden: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's lawyer tells extradition judges sex allegations are 'legally flawed'

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange today asked the High Court to block his ‘legally flawed’ extradition to Sweden over sexual assault allegations.

Although not charged, the Australian computer expert is wanted by the Swedish prosecution authority to answer questions on three allegations of sexual assault and one of rape, said to have been committed in Stockholm last August.

The accusations were made by two female WikiLeaks volunteers.

Ben Emmerson QC said Assange was facing allegations including 'sexual molestation' and prosecutors in Sweden had brought four charges.

He said one woman had been working for a Swedish organisation to which Assange was due to make a speech.

Assange stayed in her apartment while at an event.

The second went to meet him and 'made herself useful by running errands' when Assange was visiting Sweden, the court heard.

Mr Emmerson gave details of sexual encounters between Assange and the two women and of the complaints the women had made about Assange's behaviour.

He argued that the behaviour complained of would not have been an offence in England and said the women had consented to sex.

One woman described Assange's behaviour at one point as 'very strange' and talked of 'just wanting' sex to be 'over with'.

'Her words may indicate she was not particularly enjoying what was going on,' said Mr Emmerson.

'But they certainly do not go anywhere near what we would regard in this country as lack of consent.'

He said the High Court had to decide whether the 'acts' would have been offences had they happened in England.

'What (Swedish prosecutors) must prove beyond reasonable doubt is that if these circumstances as alleged had happened in London, would they have constituted offences?' Mr Emmerson told judges.

'(There are) very serious questions on dual criminality in (three charges). (There are) very serious questions on whether what happened in charge four could have recognisable as a charge in this (country).'

Mr Emmerson said there was evidence which Assange's lawyers had not seen because under Swedish law prosecutors were not obliged to reveal it until proceedings were at a later stage.

In a case which has drawn international interest, Lord Justice Thomas and Mr Justice Ousely are being asked by Assange's legal team to therefore rule that his sexual encounters with the women were ‘consensual’ and the alleged offences are not extradition offences.

Lawyers for Assange challenged a ruling by District Judge Howard Riddle at Belmarsh Magistrates' Court in south London that extradition should go ahead.

Ben Emmerson QC, appearing for Assange, 40, told two judges the European arrest warrant (EAW) on which he was being held was flawed because it failed to provide ‘a fair, accurate and proper’ description of the alleged sexual misconduct.

Mr Emmerson also argued Assange was a victim of a ‘philosophical and judicial mismatch’ between English and Swedish law on what constituted sex crimes.

Assange says the allegations against him are politically-motivated, particularly after the WikiLeaks website published a mass of leaked American diplomatic cables that rocked the US government.

At a hearing in February, Judge Riddle dismissed all Assange's arguments that, if charged, he could not get a fair trial.

Assange has expressed fears that extradition to Sweden could be a stepping stone to being sent to the US to stand trial on fresh charges relating to WikiLeaks, and he could even face the death penalty.

If his High Court appeal is unsuccessful, he could take his case to the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land.

He said nothing as he arrived at the court in London with lawyers today.

A handful of supporters gathered outside the entrance to greet him.

Meanwhile, Assange hosted a lavish 40th birthday party at the weekend attended by celebrity guests and supporters.

Assange, who won bail in December, has been staying at Ellingham Hall, the 10-bedroom Norfolk farmhouse owned by Vaughan Smith, director of the Frontline media club, which was the venue for his birthday party.

His bail conditions include having to wear an electronic ankle tag and check in daily at a nearby police station.
