Rain dampens Melbourne crowds | News.com.au
CROWD numbers in Melbourne's CBD for the New Year's Eve fireworks are well down on the anticipated 500,000, organisers say.
The steady rain has kept tens of thousands at home and even delayed the family festival fireworks at Yarra Park which were set off 10 minutes behind the 9.15pm (AEDT) schedule.
"The numbers will be nowhere near the forecast 500,000," City of Melbourne spokeswoman Ebony Beatonsaid.
"It's been so wet but the fireworks are still going ahead."
Tens of thousands of fireworks will be let off from the top of city buildings and Victoria Harbour in the Docklands to welcome in 2010.
But the rain hasn't deterred revellers for Australia's biggest dance party - Sensation - which is under cover at Etihad Stadium and where everyone is dressed in white.
Police have had an easy night saying that only four people have been arrested so far for drunkenness.
